By Alejandra Salinas Connecting people When Kristian Vester (Goodiepal and/or Mainpal.) explains why he likes or doesnīt like something, why he thinks something is good or isnīt, he always explains it in a way that makes complete sense to me, yet I cannot repeat it. Not only because I canīt remember, but because he uses sounds, movements, jokes and connections that I can only grasp for a second before they are gone. He says: "Tom rules, because only he can do that... he is the man, he can release chun ba chuum, and then he comes up with this ... (makes square motion with his hands), and then li, li, lim, ti, tim, which is not so good... uhhhhhhhhhhh, jea Tom is my man...." The Mainpal rules. He has self awareness, he knows when he has done something questionable. He can seriously double check, and laugh about anything. These records talk about life, bypassing a mere joke. But unfortunately you cannot know what he is talking about unless you are his friend. (Although you can feel it!) There are so many people out there that do boring work yet people are "shocked" and "amazed." And when someone comes along and quietly makes some really strange work, it is mostly overlooked.

The Goodiepal works in some unknown capacity for several large corporations including Lego and Nokia. In fact he makes sound for them. In fact, he just composed the theme song for the new Nokia advertising campaign. Then, without their knowlege, he remixed his own corporate themsong into a fragile and stupid little mess and released it onto this 7" single complete with the new Nokia logo, all before Nokia had a chance to release it for real themselves. Nokia of course got really upset. In a way he acted like a mad scientist cartoon spy, stealing silly sounds and silly colorful blobs from their top secret laboratory, then smuggling them out to his small but growing public. Nobody blinks an eye? Was this a critique? Was this sabotage? Was this a way to take back something that he did not want to get away? Was it just a theatrical gesture? His music is like his explanations of his music: a bit short, a bit loose, full of small sounds, funny (in the way that someone that does not need to be funny can be) and small references to things only he knows about. And for a few brief seconds I know exacly what he is talking about and then they are gone. |
