Inverted Oh-Ton, 2004
12” vinyl records, DJ equipment
If you play a waveform and its inversion simultaneously, they cancel
each other out. In the case of sound waves, the result is silence.
Transferring this phenomenon to vinyl and working with three pieces
of music by Frederic Rzewski, Eckart Beinke and Kirsten Reese two records
of each composition were produced, one the inversion of the other,
from recordings made by the Oh Ton Ensemble from Oldenberg in Germany.
Played individually the two corresponding ‘matching’ tracks
sound identical, but played simultaneously on two decks and attempting
to mix the two together in perfect synch the ‘inverted waveform’ process
comes into play. The results become a real-time remix of the existing
tracks based on the process of attempted negation.
