Mr. Carl Mcgruder Sr.: 71 year-old sign painter and community leader of the Family of Elmdale Block Club. Mr. Mcggruder is the first owner of a Habitat sponsored refurbished home in Detroit.

I was born in Detroit. It changed a whole lot, growing up in Detroit, there was discrimination, don't know why.

Boxes that I had up in the attic, they were my wife's, I didn't know what they were. But I opened them and they were salt-and-pepper shakers. She never had the chance to put them out. So I made shelf units for them.
